About Dyfnant Forest

Dyfnant Forest is a large, predominantly coniferous forest located in Powys, Mid Wales. Managed by Natural Resources Wales, it forms part of the Cambrian Mountains area and covers steep slopes and rolling hills around the Dyfnant Brook, a tributary of the River Vyrnwy. The forest’s terrain includes mixed woodland areas with mature Sitka spruce, pine, and broadleaf patches that create valuable habitats for red squirrels, birds of prey, and a variety of woodland fauna. Historically, Dyfnant Forest was developed in the mid-20th century as part of reforestation efforts following heavy timber harvesting in previous centuries. Today, it is valued for both timber production and outdoor recreation. Visitors frequent the forest for walking, cycling, and horse-riding along its extensive network of trails and forest roads. The nearby Dyfnant Lake offers additional opportunities for fishing and wildlife observation. The forest's relatively remote location provides peaceful surroundings and excellent views of the Cambrian foothills, particularly from higher vantage points near the western edges. Forestry practices emphasize environmental sustainability and protection of native species, making Dyfnant Forest an important green space in the region. It appeals to nature enthusiasts and local visitors interested in a quiet forest experience with rich birdlife and access to rural Welsh landscapes.
